{"id":12,"date":"2011-12-11T12:03:30","date_gmt":"2011-12-11T20:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.brianscloud.com\/?p=12"},"modified":"2011-12-11T12:04:46","modified_gmt":"2011-12-11T20:04:46","slug":"control-your-own-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.brianscloud.com\/?p=12","title":{"rendered":"Control Your Own Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know the &#8216;Cloud&#8217; (or as I like to call it, the Internet) is all the rage these days. \u00a0Cloud services are a good idea, you don&#8217;t have to manage anything and you get to use some great services. \u00a0There is a cost though, even on those free accounts. \u00a0That cost is data ownership.<\/p>\n<p>I read a post titled <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/114311896476820866022\/posts\/QkKTxAbKGdq\">Hey Google, thanks for making my daughter cry<\/a>\u00a0 today. \u00a0I laugh at it because he should have been responsible and backed it up if he and his daughter &#8216;really&#8217; cared about it. \u00a0Do you think these companies care about your data? \u00a0Not at all. \u00a0They only care about your data when it serves their interests.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m working on setting up my own cloud that I control. \u00a0Is it more work for me? \u00a0Yes, but I also gain the satisfaction of knowing that the companies won&#8217;t take my data away without any recourse. \u00a0Plus, if I manage my own data, they can&#8217;t sell it to advertisers and serve it up to governments without my knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Here is my public service announcement &#8211; If you don&#8217;t have possession of your data, you can&#8217;t have any expectations that it will be there tomorrow or that you have any privacy.<\/p>\n<p>As a side note, I find it interesting that he posted that on Google +. \u00a0Do you think he would be mad if they lost all his posts?<\/p>\n<p>I hope to add more posts in the future about my switch from corporation owned services over to self controlled services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know the &#8216;Cloud&#8217; (or as I like to call it, the Internet) is all the rage these days. \u00a0Cloud services are a good idea, you don&#8217;t have to manage anything and you get to use some great services. \u00a0There is a cost though, even on those free accounts. \u00a0That cost is data ownership.
